I hate Biology

Recently, I received a message on Instagram from Carlie who said "I've been studying Biology for the past two years and I absolutely hate it!! However, I've invested so much of my time, loans and energy that I do not want to change my major, what should I do?"

Well Carlie, many students are in your shoes and this is a critical point in your life. I applaud you for being honest with yourself this far. Many adults much older haven’t been this honest since they were children. There are a few things that I would recommend. One, take a good look at why you choose your major in the first place, there may be something there that needs to be rekindled- perhaps it’s a different strand of biology, perhaps the reason you started is so great and biology is just one obstacle that you have to overcome. At any rate, take a good look at why you started and what attracted you in the first place. Once you look at the root, ask your self is this reason a valid reason to build a career on? If yes, I would recommend you sit down with your advisors and let them know this and have them explain all of the ways you can use your biology degree. If one really resonates with you begin looking into internship opportunities. If the reason, is not valid this is the perfect time to build a relationship with the career services department and invest some real energy into figuring it out.

The fact is being happy and choosing a career that is aligned with your talents, and interest will yield many rewards. You are at the perfect place to stake your claim to a life of career purpose and fulfillment. Do not forget to think about the things that are important to you when talking to the career office. Make a list of what’s important and why you choose your major. Take it to your career services department.

You've got amazing talents! I look forward to the manifestation.

Sincerely,

TM
